National History Day is a national competition that starts at the classroom level, moves on to the regional level (within your state), proceeds to the state level, and culminates at the national level competition.
The students in my 8th grade classes participate in this competition at the classroom level for a grade in both English and Social Studies 8. Many of the core curriculum standards are met in both subject areas by doing this type of research/project. While students will learn much of the basics through in class lessons and assignments, students will also have to do some work outside of the classroom to meet the expectations and requirements to successfully complete this project. They will work on this throughout the first semester, and some students may then have the opportunity to move on to the regional competition in early March, the state competition in late April, and the national competition in mid-June.
Participation beyond the classroom level is strictly voluntary. However, every year Jeffers High School students have participated in all of the succeeding levels-yes-even the national level. This is a great opportunity for students to demonstrate their knowledge and creativity on a topic of their choosing (but which fits under the overall yearly theme.)
